What is Interpreting for California?
Interpreting for California is a statewide campaign involving interpreters, communities, and providers speaking up for real language access in health care.
We are working to ensure quality of care and communication between health care providers and patients. We want to make health care a reality for the almost 7 million Californians with language access needs.
Our plan: Build medical interpreting services into the Medi-Cal program and establish a widely recognized credentialing program specifically for medical interpreters with uniform standards for training, certification, pay, and benefits.
Medi-Cal is California’s version of Medicaid, the federal health program for low-income individuals and families. In California, the federal government pays for 50% to 75% of the cost for Medi-Cal. More importantly, Medi-Cal providers are mandated to deliver interpreter services in specific languages, if more than 5,000 Medi-Cal recipients speak that language. Building medical interpreter services into Medi-Cal is a cost effective way of bringing health care to communities with language access needs.
